As August draws to a close, so does our Spotlight on Women Writers series. For the final feature, we profile a woman with many accolades to her name, who equally appreciates the simple and beautiful things in life. Look out for Marienne’s stunning Afrikaans book on gardening and landscaping, coming soon. 

Marienne’s story 

Marienne Uys matriculates from Barrydale High with the distinct honor of first place on the Western Cape merit list. She also achieves first place on the merit list for the countrywide South African Senior History-examination.  She receives her BA(Mus) degree from the University of Stellenbosch, in addition to the Unisa Teachers Licentiate (piano) and the Unisa Teachers Licentiate (Singing), and a Senior Certificate in Speech Training conducted by Robert Mohr. While teaching music at Heidelberg High, Dr Uys completes the BAHons in Humanities cum laude from Unisa as well as an MA in Humanities from Stellenbosch. She also receives a D.Litt et Phil from Unisa. She regularly acts as adjudicator at several Eisteddfodau in the Southern Cape, Stellenbosch and Cape Town. 

The multi-talented Marienne expands her interests to include landscaping and photography, and publishes several books. She writes articles on landscaping for HuisgenootYouSarieRooi RoseSouth African Garden and Home and Landbouweekblad, and is a popular motivational speaker. 

After her retirement she moves to the Strand where she has immersed herself in her extremely successful Marienne Uys – Landscaping cc. business. Her life is characterised by her deep love for music, the arts, the written word and nature.  

Marienne’s inspiration 

A woman who inspires Marienne is EMILY HOBHOUSE.  She had empathy with those who suffer and attempted with great courage and self-denial to influence a strong government to reconsider.
