Author Profile: Lesang Lebakeng
Lesang’s story
I was born and raised in Botswana. I moved to South Africa in 2006. I hold a Bachelor’s of Education Degree in Foundation Phase from the University of the Witwatersrand. I am a mother of two and married to the most amazing man. I am currently residing in Accra, Ghana and enjoying writing children’s storybooks, a project that is very close to my heart.
I had the privilege of growing up amongst an army of very strong women – my late great grandmother, my mom and my five aunts. They all played a pivotal role in shaping the woman that I am today. But in this article, I would like to honour my late great grandmother.
Lesang’s inspiration
My great grandmother taught me respect, honesty, resilience and selflessness. She was the epitome of strength and zeal. She gave without expecting anything in return; she would give the last crystal of her sugar without any hesitation. Her home was a home for all.
When I was a little girl, my great grandmother made me a soft toy. It was a little doll that looked just like me. She had beautiful soft brown ‘skin’. I have carried this memory all my life; in my younger years I could not decipher the meaning ofthe doll, but today as an adult I realised that my grandmother was cementing and solidifying my identity as a black woman. Today I am writing children’s storybooks that were inspired by her. My great grandmother is my biggest inspiration.
To all the women out there, let us continue to empower, liberate and embrace ourselves.
I wish every single woman a very happy women’s month. Mosadi thari ya sechaba!
