Spotlight on Women | Part 4: Kelly Alder

Author profile: Kelly Alder

In the fourth part of our Spotlight on women writers series, we profile the inspirational Kelly Alder- author of ‘The Fourteenth Wife’ – A Search For Belonging.

Kelly’s story

When I was in my twenties, I tragically lost both my parents to AIDS. Reeling from this loss I got involved with a Native American Indian cult, marrying its leader and becoming his 14th wife. Having escaped, I am now happily married, have a wonderful daughter, and live between Cape Town and Zurich in Switzerland. I began writing my memoir to record this extraordinary and transformative part of my life. There have been many times when I wished I could have asked my mother questions about her life. I want my daughter to have all the answers, should she have questions after I am gone, to teach her never to give up and trust herself.

Kelly’s inspiration

I am lucky to have a wide circle of female friends whom I admire and inspire me every day. In Cape Town, I am most inspired by my dear friend Marioara De La Tara, who owns Wild Olive, a small independent soap and perfumery business. She works tirelessly to educate, train, and uplift her employees from the Xhosa community, creating jobs, and improving lives. She is an entrepreneur with a big heart.
